ARAGÓN by Laura Ballester Melendo

What is it?
-It’s one of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain and 4th largest.
-It is located in the northeast of the Iberian peninsula -Aragon has 3 provinces: Huesca, Zaragoza and Teruel.
-The capital city is Zaragoza
-Languages: Spanish, catalan and aragonese.
-Climate: continental moderate.



Geography
-In the north of Aragon, we have the Pyrenees (Huesca) is one of the most important mountain ranges of Spain and also it’s a natural border with France. Its highest peaks are the Aneto (3,404 m), the highest in the range and Monte Perdido (3,355 m).
-In the middle, between the mountain rages of the Pyrenees and the Iberian System, Aragon has the Ebro valley.
-In Aragon, there are natural wonders such as the natural park from the stone’s monastery
History
1)Roman people arrived and progressed easily.
2)In 714, Arabians conquered Hispania and called it Al-Andalus, also they converted to Islam Roman cities such as Saraqusta (Zaragoza) or Wasqa(Huesca).
3)In 1492 Christians reconquered Al-Andalus with the Catholic monarchs ( Fernando II of Aragon and Elizabeth I of Castilla)
4)Some centuries later, after succession wars in the Modern Age and an Independence War between the United Kingdom, France and Spain (1808-1814), Zaragoza was destroyed and the economical development stopped.

Culture
The badge was made in 1499
 Up left-> Symbol of the legendary kingdom of Sobrarbe. Up right-> Iñigo Arista’s cross (noble from Navarra and Aragon).
Down left-> St. George’s cross and four muslim heads.
Down right-> Royal sign of Aragon.
23rd April is Saint George's day, our patron saint, this day is also book's day.






Food
There is a great variety of vegetables and fruits. Such as Calanda’s peaches The most famous plates are the crumbs with different meats, a type of meat call ternasco and Teruel’s ham.
Dance
The traditional dance of Aragon is called “jota”. The jota is a very complex dance with a specific manner of singing. People from Zaragoza are also called “maños”. Our songs are based on the Virgin of the Pilar.
